What It Does Well

  • Encourages creativity and engineering skills through hands-on building activities.
  • Includes educational STEM content that teaches children about mechanics and physics.
  • Provides a fun way to engage with family or friends while working on a project together.

Where It Comes Up Short

  • The kit only supplies enough parts to build one gear bot at a time, requiring disassembly and reuse for each new build, which may frustrate multiple children sharing the kit.
  • The papercraft components are not very durable and can be difficult for younger children to construct and handle, limiting the longevity of the created models.
  • The complexity of building the models may pose a challenge for younger users (8-10 years), requiring adult assistance, which might not be ideal for independent play.

How does it work?

The Klutz Lego Gear Bots Science/STEM Activity Kit invites children aged 8-12 to engage in hands-on learning through building kinetic creatures powered by simple mechanics. The kit allows users to construct eight unique models, including lively figures like DJ Bubbles and a pterodactyl, using a combination of LEGO Technic bricks and papercraft components.

Here’s how it works: each model is designed with various mechanical elements such as axles, cams, and cranks, which replicate the movement mechanics found in engines. The included 64-page instructional guide provides step-by-step directions on assembling each model with clarity and ease. As children crank the handle on the side of these models, they can witness firsthand how mechanical systems operate in a fun and interactive way.

Importantly, while the kit includes all necessary LEGO pieces, users can only build one model at a time. This means that once a model is completed, the pieces must be disassembled and reused to create the next one. The papercraft characters add a custom touch, allowing creativity and imagination to flourish, although they may require careful handling due to their less durable nature compared to LEGO bricks. Overall, the kit not only fosters engineering skills and creativity but also encourages experimentation and learning through play.

It appeals to parents, grandparents, and other gift buyers looking for educational toys that promote creativity and hands-on learning. The kit encourages imaginative play and engineering skills through building and creating kinetic sculptures, which makes it suitable for families and caregivers looking to engage children in constructive and interactive activities.

Top positive review

Love it!

Top critical review

Apparently, I did not read the description well enough to know that this kit DID NOT contain 8 separate LEGO gear bots. I bought it thinking each child could make one. However, there are only enough parts to make each gear bot one at a time. The parts have to be reused with each new build. Also the “paper” parts are not sturdy. They’re difficult for 8-10 year olds (and their grandma) and would have been much better if they were made of plastic.

Build, Create, and Innovate: Unleashing Imagination with Klutz Lego Gear Bots Kit!

The Klutz Lego Gear Bots Kit provides a delightful opportunity for young minds to explore engineering concepts through hands-on play. With its engaging designs and comprehensive STEM content, it sparks creativity while fostering learning. However, potential buyers should be aware that the kit only allows for the building of one bot at a time, which might not meet the expectations of those looking for multiple simultaneous builds. Additionally, the reliance on papercraft components may challenge younger users in terms of durability and ease of assembly. Overall, this kit stands out as a unique educational tool for imaginative play, making it a thoughtful choice for anyone looking to inspire a love of science and innovation in children.
